Welcome to Week #1.
It’s happening. It’s really happening. I’ve joined the gym and I’ve done a weekly shop. For myself I’ve found that the best way to go forward is to create a food and gym schedule. I like to write down what I’m going to have for breakfast, lunch and dinner every day because from previous diets I’ve realised something that has let me down is opportunity. By this, I mean if I haven’t got anything in the fridge as a meal, I’ll just order a dominos. Not great!
Before shopping, I decided to sit down and take a long look at my diet and be honest about what I really needed to change. I found that my weaknesses were at three stages of the day. 1) Breakfast 2) The 4pm energy booster 3) Just before bed. For breakfast I would just have anything I could put my hands on or nothing. Quite often last year I found myself having triple chocolate muffins for breakfast because they were there and I needed something quick. Now I look back and cringe. I’ve decided to make the concious effort to make time for breakfast, even if it means having to wake up 20 minutes earlier, because it is such an important meal of the day. In this time, I’ll have porridge and almond milk. I’d advise looking at the ingredients before you buy the oats and just check they are 100% oats and not mixed with anything. You can add loads of things to porridge from fruit and seeds to honey, so you can be creative! I don’t mind plain porridge, so I’m going to stick to a big bowl of that every morning. This should carry me through until lunch time.
At 4pm is when my cravings really kick in. Needing the energy to power through the last couple of hours at work, I’ll fancy something like a sugary tea and toast. But no, this time I’ve added to my shopping list bananas, and lots of them. A cup of black tea and a banana will be my new 4pm go-to.
This transitions will hopefully go smoothly, however the transition I’m least looking forward to is no snacking before bed. I’m really going to try and just go cold-turkey on this habit as it’s not good at all. I have though bought ’emergency kit kats’ as they’re not to bad at 100 calories per bar, but I hope that the packet will remain closed.
For a more detailed run down of my meals, please see my weekly food diary here.
The name Felicity Jones may be fresh in your mind due to her Oscar nominated performance of Jane Wilde in the film The Theory of Everything, but, if you’re a true chick-flick lover like ourselves, you may also remember her playing Kim from the film Chalet Girl with Ed Westwick. No, we don’t blame you if Ed Westwick is the only thing you can remember from the film. Aaaand if we’re really going back in time, you may remember her from the classic childhood programme, The Worst Witch, where she played Ethel Hallow. Well, if you don’t know her after that introduction. You’re about to. Magnificently gracing the cover of InStyle UK and becoming the cover story for the industry’s beauty edit Violet Grey, Jones is officially here to stay. We’re forecasting big things for this young woman. Check out her best looks from InStyle UK’s March cover and Violet Grey below:
One coat normally isn’t enough for me when it comes to nail polish – I like my polish opaque but I surprisingly liked the finish with one coat of OPI Taup-less. You could still see my nail, but it looked elegant and sophisticated, rather than a block opaque colour finish.
I continued to do a second coat and was left with an opaque, glossy, mink colour. The brush was the perfect size as well, it picked up just the right amount and you could basically cover the whole nail in one sweep. What do you think?
One year ago today I took Making Up from tumblr. and began it’s more serious journey on WordPress. Although I still have such a long way to go, I’m proud of my achievements for this year as I continue to blog about the latest beauty products with a hint of lifestyle and fashion. This blog has given me some great opportunities and allowed me to meet some lovely people, and I hope the next year will be even better!
I’m constantly trying to improve my blog, and soon you will see the new content I have been planning. As I’ve said before though – I still have such a long way to go, so if you have any comments or if there’s anything you’d like to see on here, please do let me know in the comments or feel free to email me.
I look forward to the next year.
As a 20 year old beauty junkie I’m slightly ashamed to say this, but here we go. This is my first time having gels. As a student I find that I just don’t have excess money to get my nails done professionaly, so end up doing it myself weekly. That was until my lovely friend offered to do them for me, free of charge. She used SensatioNail Gel Nail Polish in Pink Chiffon and told me they would last a few weeks. The process familiar to probably most of you, was strange to me. Not having to wait for the nail polish to dry and getting a a gloss finish that I could only dream of amazed me. Two and a half weeks later and they were still going strong – it wasn’t until I peeled them off myself that they came away. (Which btw is a really satisfying feeling!)
I love make up. I am a complete make up hoarder. But when it comes to experimenting with make up, I’m really not that brave. So I often look for subtle ways to change my make up from the usual day or night routine. This double winged eyeliner trend is subtle yet sleek so fits in perfectly with my not-so-outgoing-make up. I know what you’re thinking – it’s hard enough getting one pair of eyeliner wings to match, let alone two pairs – but get it right, and the payoff is worth it. Embraced by Kim Kardashian for years and spotted at Peter Philip’s first catwalk for Christian Dior for their Spring/Summer ’15 collection, the trend can be adjusted to your own style. It can be as bold and dramatic as you like; infusing colours, sparkles and glitters, or as subtle as you want; a small, blurred wing pulled out from the lower lash line. Not something to try for the first time before you go out, this trend will take practice and when you do, keep near you lots of cotton buds (or Q tips) to wipe away those pesky strays.
Will this be a trend you will be incorporating into your make up?
Although it feels like it barely passed, AW is upon us again and summer is very nearly over. It’s my favourite time of year for fashion and I’m so excited for the brand new array of coats, boots and evening outfits to hit shop floors this September. I was lucky enough to attend the Autumn Winter 2014 New Look Press Event back in May and am so excited to show you some exclusive pictures of their new collection and key trends for this Autumn/Winter.
The peep toe trend has officially come full circle. From being a trend synonymous with the 1940’s, it has made its way through the designer circle and slipped down in to the high street stores, with New Look taking it under their wing, displaying some lovely peep toe options. The cut out detailing and the buckle make this peep toe boot rather biker-ish, and the simpler sleek mules, reference a SS14 Whistles pair, at a much more affordable price. Both can be easily teamed with skinny jeans and a casual top for a stylish day time outfit.
Similar to the Topshop jumpsuit we have all seen this season, which comes in black, pink and white – New Look have done their own (and hopefully slightly cheaper) version. Again symbolising a classic Whistle’s design from the SS14 season, the jumpsuit is strapless, fitted and with a straight leg. On the back there is also an oval cut out shape, but avoids the no bra dilemma by still keeping a band on the back.
If you fell in love with the 90’s this season, like I definitely did with Iggy Azeala’s Fancy video and Kylie Jenner’s make up, then there is something for you here. This shoe and bag combo screams the 90’s. The low chunky heel and pointy top is something you’ll definitely see on the feet of the women in the films Sliding Doors or American Beauty! And the check detailing of course relating to Iggy’s take on the Clueless outfit.
Just because winter is here, it doesn’t mean you have to throw your pastels away and move to dark reds and purples. By combining some texture, New Look has created the winter pastels. I’m not sure how confident I would be carrying the pink fluffy tote bag just yet, but can see a more stylish person carrying it off perfectly. The suede texture on the shoes and the leather crocodile skin effect on the bag also make this pastel blue a staple winter edition.
Do you have your eye on anything in this collection? I know I do…
